Ellen was the first president of Tupten Osel Choling (TOC) and helped to establish her spiritual guide, Ven. Sogan Rinpoche’s, group as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization founded 4-2-2002.  She was fully devoted to Sogan Rinpoche and the flourishing of Tupten Osel Choling.  This became one of the most important activities of her life. Ellen remained on the board of TOC until her last breath taken on 2-21-2020.
An obituary by Sogan Tulku, Pema Lodoe
Ellen Gurian was very dear to me. She was an extremely kind, good and dependable person; someone who would always go out of her way to help another – regardless of who they were, their status, class, race, gender, etc. – she was equally open and friendly to all. I feel Ellen is someone who could be used as an example of how a good human being should be.
I first met Ellen in California in 1999 when I began to teach Buddhism in the west. We hit it off straight away and she became one of my closest students, but more than that she was one of my best friends, a dharma friend; a close confidant, and someone I could rely on anytime – regardless of the circumstance. Her passing is a great personal loss to me.
Saying that, we all have to pass away at some time. It’s simply a part of living. Ellen had a deep faith and trust in the teachings of Buddha, which she practiced wholeheartedly. Indeed, she became a living example of the qualities Buddha taught: morality, openness, kind-heartedness, and compassion. I’m sure her practice will serve her well and that her passing, peaceful as it was, will lead her to a good birth in the future, one within which she will continue her benevolent activities for the benefit of all who come into contact with her.

I’ll never forget Ellen, and continually pray for her; and I also pray that we all may come to possess the qualities she so clearly demonstrated.
